Our journey

We still design the wet edge.

Townsville ecological design for wetlands, foreshores and gardens — so they can be built and kept alive. The practice began in 1999. The name became Zingspace in 2006. We take that work on now.

The years

Where the practice comes from.

Four names. One practice. Townsville throughout. The work continues.

  1. 1999–2006 · Founding

From the island to the city.

The practice starts in Townsville in 1999 as Magnetic Island Weeding & Revegetation Services, then Island Reveg, then Grier & Associates. Landscape ecology and project management take hold. The company is incorporated in 2004. The name becomes Zingspace in 2006.

  2. 2006–2009 · Making

    The studio at full stretch.

Nina Froggatt joins. Lakes Savanna Wetland is designed and built. Carlyle is a multi-year account. One hundred and seventy-six jobs in 2008. Office at 181 Flinders Street — training room, Expo, a magenta brand. Wetlands, foreshores, gardens, water-sensitive design, and the volume work that kept the studio in the field.

  3. 2010 · Wider north

    Townsville, and a Cairns office.

The practice reorganises into holdings and regional companies. A Cairns office. A move toward Denham Street. Catchment and forestry work sits beside the Townsville water work. The civic wetlands and coasts remain the centre of gravity.

  4. 2011 · A full year

After the cyclone, the work holds.

Post-Yasi assessments. Rowes Bay. Montana lots. The Strand. A busy year in the field. The name is kept. The subject does not change.

  5. 2012 onward · The work continues

    Founder-led. We take new work.

Drawings, places, and the judgment that comes from having built them. We take new commissions on wetlands, coasts, living edges and Townsville gardens.

The work that holds

Places that prove the method.

Work you can walk. The same subject we take on now.

Today

Founder-led. Townsville. We take work.

Nigel Grier is the principal. See Work for the places we still design from.

We take wetland and water-sensitive design, coastal, estuarine and intertidal edges, blue carbon, public landscape, specialist advice, and Water Smart Gardens for Townsville homes.

Looking ahead

Bring us the next edge.

Living edges are the work. We draw typicals, palettes and wetland operations from built places, and we take new commissions. A drain, a foreshore, a wetland or a garden in this climate — start a conversation.
